- Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday, with potential weekend or bank holiday work; shift patterns vary, including early/late shifts or annualised hours)
- Salary:
- PAYE: £12.85 per hour
- Umbrella: £16.12 per hour

As a Refuse and Cleansing Operative, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining clean and safe public spaces by collecting waste, clearing detritus, and supporting recycling initiatives. From litter picking and street sweeping to assisting at Household Waste Recycling Centres or undertaking yardsman duties, you’ll contribute to a high-quality, customer-focused service that promotes waste minimisation and environmental care. What You’ll Do:
- Complete cleansing rounds, including litter picking, sweeping, and loading heavy items (e.g., illicit tipping) onto vehicles.
- Collect waste from up to 2,000 properties daily, including food, garden, residual, and recyclable materials, often walking long distances.
- Assist at Household Waste Recycling Centres, helping the public unload bulky items, segregating materials for recycling, and keeping sites safe and clean.
- Perform yardsman duties, such as driving forklifts, loading/unloading vehicles, stock control, and issuing personal protective equipment.
- Operate equipment (e.g., pressure washers, strimmers, or chewing gum removal tools) after appropriate training.
- Drive vehicles or plant machinery (if licensed) and perform daily pre- and post-use maintenance checks, reporting defects promptly.
- Promote recycling, waste minimisation, and environmental initiatives through public engagement and community events.
- Provide courteous, customer-focused service, offering information and assistance to residents and handling sensitive situations with tact.
- Distribute leaflets/flyers and participate in community-based environmental or educational initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records for cleansing, collection, and delivery schedules.
- Work closely with crews and supervisors to ensure an efficient and effective service.
- Comply with health, safety, and environmental protection legislation, including risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Undertake basic administrative tasks and use mobile working systems (e.g., RAMIS) as required.
- Occasionally work outside normal hours, including bank holidays, weekends, or overtime, to meet service demands or respond to emergencies (e.g., extreme weather support).

You’ll need:
- Essential:
- Basic awareness of cleansing or waste management issues.
- Ability to work individually or as part of a team to deliver high-quality services.
- Strong communication skills to engage effectively with residents and handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Customer-focused approach, with the ability to listen and respond to residents’ needs.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, bank holidays, or overtime as required.
- Flexibility to perform a range of duties as directed by the supervisor.
- Numeracy and literacy skills to complete records and schedules.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.

- Two years of references/work history.
- Desirable:
- Equivalent qualifications/relevant experience.
- Previous experience in a public-facing or customer-focused role.
- Experience driving and maintaining vehicles or operating plant machinery (full driving licence, LGV 1 or 2 advantageous but not essential).
- Knowledge of the local area and its waste management challenges.
- Experience working with community groups on cleansing or environmental initiatives.
