About the Role:
Network Recruitment Wales is excited to offer eight temporary positions for Recycling & Waste Operatives to join a dedicated team in Pontypool, Torfaen, starting 18 June 2025. This 5-week role is perfect for individuals looking to make a difference during a temporary peak in workload. Working within the Economy & Environment department’s Recycling & Waste team, you’ll help deliver high-quality waste and recycling services, ensuring Torfaen remains clean, safe, and sustainable.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Collect waste and recycling materials (food waste, garden waste, residual waste, hygiene waste, dry recycling, and trade waste) from households and businesses as per collection schedules.
  • Ensure collections are completed on time, leaving areas clean and tidy, with receptacles returned to their original locations without obstructing pathways.
  • Monitor recycling bins for contamination and follow appropriate procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness of collection vehicles and equipment, reporting any defects promptly.
  • Interact with the public in a professional, polite, and courteous manner, addressing basic enquiries about waste and recycling services.
  • Adhere to Health & Safety policies and safe working practices to ensure a secure environment for all.
  • Undertake additional tasks as needed, such as litter picking, town centre sweeping, or safe removal of sharps (with relevant training).
  • Complete paperwork and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Work at other depots if required (transport provided where possible, or mileage claimable at the council’s rate).
What We’re Looking For:
  • Experience: Experience in waste collection, manual labour, or a similar outdoor role is desirable but not essential.
  • Skills: Good communication skills, ability to work effectively in a team, and self-motivation to perform tasks without close supervision.
  • Attributes: Physically fit for repetitive lifting and outdoor work in all weather conditions, with a commitment to delivering a high-quality service to residents and businesses.
  • Knowledge: Basic understanding of waste and recycling processes is an advantage.
  • Desirable: Willingness to undertake relevant training and familiarity with Health & Safety practices in an operational environment.
  • Flexibility: Ability to work bank holidays or occasional out-of-hours shifts if required (additional remuneration may apply).
Candidate Requirements:
  • Eligible to work in the UK.
  • Provide a Criminal Convictions Declaration and Confidentiality Agreement.
  • Submit a CV with 2 years of references/work history.
  • Complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if required due to potential contact with vulnerable groups.
Why Choose This Role?
  • Contribute to a cleaner, greener Torfaen during a busy period.
  • Work in a supportive team with all necessary training and personal protective equipment provided.
  • Enjoy an active, outdoor role with the chance to make a visible impact in the community.
  • Ideal for candidates seeking a short-term summer role with meaningful community benefits.
