Job Description

As Protective Security Policy Manager you will ensure robust governance around our security function and across the business to support compliance.

You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive physical and personnel security policies, standards, and frameworks in alignment with industry best practices and regulatory requirements. As the subject matter expert, you will support colleagues within the Security team to understand the implications of relevant legislation and policies, aiding implementation and adherence across the wider business.

You will manage communication with our external regulators (Ofwat, DEFRA and DWI), this includes any annual reporting requirements, responding to queries, developing responses to official requests and ensuring we meet any relevant milestones.

What you will be doing as a Protective Security Policy & Standard Manager
  • Line manager responsibilities for a team of up to three administrators.
  • Hold key relationships with internal senior managers and external stakeholders. (Intelligence Agencies, Specialist Police Units, Local Resilience Forums & Regulators including DEFRA and DWI.)
  • Responsible for reviewing and enhancing internal policy and guidance documents to ensure they remain relevant and in line with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for understanding areas of risk and non-compliance across the business.
  • Providing advice to colleagues around our legislative requirements, interpreting our regulator's guidance as a subject matter expert to support compliance across the business. Promoting common standards and alignment of security policy and practice across Thames Water.
  • Maintain an understanding of the security sector and wider environment, horizon scanning, identifying opportunities and innovations which could be incorporated to the benefit of Thames Water.
  • Responsible for reporting required for external obligations, compliance with regulatory requirements, contractual obligations, and internal policies e.g. RAG return and annual audits. Ensure all other regulatory milestones and agreed security KPIs and SLAs are met.

The base location for this role will be Kemble Court, Reading, on a Hybrid basis.

What you should bring to the role
  • Strong understanding and experience of security policies & standards, governance, risk & compliance activities, or related roles, ideally gained from working in a regulated industry. 
  • Understanding of security regulations, laws, and industry standards (e.g. SEMD, PSG, WUKSS, NPSA)
  • Strong negotiation and people-influencing skills. Ability to communicate at all levels, present to an audience and build strong relationships.
  • Experience in developing and implementing security performance metrics and reporting frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of security principles, practices, and technologies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are needed for report writing.
  • Good understanding of Office 365 products, such as Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Security Institute (SyI) Diploma (level 5) in Security Management is desirable.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment, ideally the water industry i.e., utilities, government departments, and critical national infrastructure is desirable.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) before starting within this role.
